Lavazza Tierra! Intenza Espresso Coffee - 2.2 pounds whole bean. Lavazza Tierra Intenza contains 30% Rainforest Alliance certified coffee. 100% Arabica product made using the washed, green coffee exclusively from the three targeted communities and grown at medium to high-altitudes. Lavazza Tierra! is a sustainable development project combining product quality with improved living conditions for three small-scale coffee growing communities.
Lavazza singled out three disadvantaged coffee producing communities in Honduras, Colombia and Peru and provided technical assistance and training to help make their coffee farms sustainable. Up until that point, many farmers had been operating without basic safety and environmental measures. In Honduras, waste water from processing facilities was being discharged directly into rivers, and workers were applying pesticides without proper protective gear. By the end of 2005, after just three years of help from Lavazza, project farms had transformed their practices enough to earn Rainforest Alliance certification. Lavazza now buys their coffee, providing a steady source of income to the farmers.
Modern coffee-growing equipment is provided to each of the communities and the right instruments to cultivate and market coffee by means of environmentally friendly techniques. Lavazza works with the Rainforest Alliance, an international non-governmental organization, actively involved in promoting sustainable coffee. The investments not only guarantee a steady stream of high-quality coffee, but have also had a significant impact on the environmental and social well-being of the farms and farmers involved.
In addition to fostering improvements geared toward meeting Rainforest Alliance certification, Lavazza went further, building classrooms and infirmaries, and refurbishing facilities to improve and simplify coffee-processing. In Honduras, the Tierra! Project set up two micro-credit banks that help growers manage their economic resources more efficiently and independently. More projects are underway, including the construction of a test farm and improved educational services.
According to Mario Cerutti, director of Lavazza's Supply Chain Department and head of the project, Tierra! has no presumption of becoming a new sustainable development model, but it is undoubtedly an important experiment. Our goal is to cooperate with the local communities to give them the know-how and technical assistance necessary to improve the product’s quality. This means that small producers can become competitive, marketing their coffee for what it is effectively worth.
In order to improve productivity, the Peruvian farms instituted a new coffee bean processing system with solar powered driers. The technology improves efficiency and eliminates the need for fuel. Farmers also adopted a new coffee plant pruning process that encourages higher yields.
All these improvements translate into a richer cup of coffee. Lavazza Tierra! is made exclusively from green Arabica coffee grown in the three communities. Arabica is the most highly prized coffee variety. Unlike most Arabica blends, Lavazza Tierra Intenzo uses 100% washed Arabica beans with distinguished smooth full-bodied flavor a mild scent and notes of chocolate.
